description:
Part 1 of 2. Major (Dr.) Mary Krueger (Biglow) was born in April 1969 in Melbourne, Florida. She went to Oakmont Regional High School in Aspernham, Massachusetts, graduating in 1987. She went to Houghton University and graduated in 1991. She applied for a military scholarship with the Army and started medical school in September 1992. She was the first person in her family to join the military. She went to Officer Basic Course in the summer of 1992 at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. She did specialty training in family medicine at Fort Lee, Virginia, Tripler in Hawaii, and Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. She then did a development fellowship at Fort Lewis (now Joint Base Lewis-McChord) at the University of Washington at Seattle. (Thesis: Barriers to breast feeding in active duty Army women). She got married and had two kids while in Seattle. She then moved to Fort Belvoir, Viriginia in September 2002. She went to Fort Benning, Georgia soon after before deploying to the 48th Combat Support Hospital. There, she provided medical care for American troops, enemy soldiers, and worked with local tribes to help Afghan women. Working in tents, she was initially assigned to the emergency room. Most injuries were land mine injuries, diarrheal diseases, respiratory infections, and kids falling off roofs. After two months, she moved to civil affairs to help develop Afghan healthcare through mobile clinics. She served in Operation Enduring Freedom, and has received a bronze star, combat medical badge, two Army Commendation Medals, and an Army Achievement Medal.
