Patricia Nix was born in 1941 in Columbus, GA. When she was 16, the family moved to Atlanta, GA. She attended junior college at Emory at Oxford for two years. She then attended Emory University Nursing School. She joined the Army to defray the costs. She met her husband, a medical student at Emory and they married in 1963. She graduated nursing school in 1964 and then spent 6 weeks in San Antonio, TX at the Medical Field Service School. She then went to Ft. McPherson. She was ordered to Vietnam in March, 1966. She spent a night in the 3rd Field Hospital in Saigon and was then moved to Vung Tau, a village 35 miles SE of Saigon. While there, her mother had a heart attack and she was sent home to Georgia. She spent a month as her mother recuperated and then was sent back to Vung Tau. It was early in the Vietnam War and Vung Tau received a manageable flow of casualties. She handled dressing and soakings of wounds. She came back to the United States in March 1967. She returned to Ft. McPherson as a Captain, eventually deciding to leave at 3 years service when she was 7 months pregnant.
