Joyce Lester was born in Dacula, Georgia in 1933 as the oldest of 5 children. Her mother was a housewife and her father was a career Army non-commissioned officer. She was raised on Sullivan's Island where her father was stationed at Ft. Moultrie. Joyce was in the first grade when WWII broke out. Joyce graduated high school and worked full time at a local Savannah radio station WSAV when she joined the Air Force in October of 1952. After basic training Joyce went to radio school for her technical training where she studied basic electronics in St. Louis. After finishing radio school she was sent to Andrews AFB in 1953.
