Nancy Rundell (maiden name Torlinski) was born in Oct 1922. Her father had gone to the Naval Academy, but left after 5 years to become a lawyer. (Eventually becoming a Captain in the Reservist) She had one sister. She attended Woodrow Wilson high school, graduating in 1940. She then went to Cornell for college as an English major. She was allowed to graduate early from college. She served in US Navy (Waves) from June 1944 to June 1946 during WWII. She had four months training at Smiths College and worked as a communications officer with the rank LT JG. She oversaw the postal, the teletype operators, and the censorship of the brig mail. Spending 1 year in Boston and 1 year in Washington DC. In Boston, the receiving station was sending 10,000 men a month to Europe. After the war she used the GI bill to attend the Wash School for secretaries, but stayed connected to the military as her husband was Francis E. “Bud” Rundell, a 2nd generation West Point graduate, Air Force officer and B17 pilot and POW, She served as officers wives club president, magazine editor, and authored “Front Row Balcony” after a 1978 tour in Iran.
