Karen Kelly was born in Camp LeJeune, NC in Dec 1947. Her father served in the Marine Corp for 30 years. Graduated from the University of South Florida in Tampa with a BA in Physical Education. Joined Marine Corp in March 1969 after college. She was the first woman to be assigned to Marine Barracks Naval Training Center, IL in Aug 1973 (till 1977) in charge of the colors and the correctional facility. During this time, she also recieved a Masters Degree from Roosevelt Univ in Education, Supervision, and Administration. From 1980 to 1981 she was the adjunct for the 3rd Marine Base in Okinawa. Stationed in Korea as part of Operation Team Spirit. She was assigned as a watch officer to the Marine Corps Command Center, Quantico from Aug 1983 to Jul 1986. The bombing of Beirut, Lebanon happened during this time. Her role was to facilitate communications to the Commandant. She was also head of the Retired Affairs program during her time there. From 1986 to 1990, she was assigned to Marine Corp Logistics Base, Albany, GA as an Adjunct, responsible for admin, publications, mail room, files, of the base. She earned the Navy Commendation Medal. She retired in July 1990 at the rank of Major.
