LEWISnancy
Nancy Lewis was born in Hackensack, NJ in Dec 1930. While in college at the University of Tennessee she was an active volunteer with the Red Cross. Upon graduation she worked at a Child Welfare Office in Huntington, WV. At the onset of Vietnam, she wrote a letter to the Red Cross asking to assist with their efforts in the Vietnam war. This request was granted and she was assigned to the USS Repose, a reactivated hospital ship in San Francisco, and became the hospital field director. She traveled from Hunters Point, San Francisco, then cruised to Hawaii, then Japan, then Vietnam. The USS Repose was stationed roughly a mile offshore of Vietnam at the parallel. The only way on and off the ship was via helicopter. Patients were flown onto the ship by helicopter. She was aboard the ship a year. She did some travel off the ship during her time near the parallel. One time she briefly hung out with the Donut Dollies, a Red Cross organization, who hung out with service men in the front lines and foxholes. When she returned from Vietnam, she joined the faculty at the School of Social Work at the University of Tennessee. During September 11th, she was a part of the Red Cross efforts in New York City.
