Barbara Pinkering was born in May 1949 in Ganado, AZ. Her family consisted of 6 sisters and 1 brother. Her parents were both full blooded Navajo. Her parents did not teach her the Navajo language and culture so that she could assimilate to white culture. She is a veteran of the USMC and served during the Vietnam Era from Feb 1970 to Mar 1973. She went to school in Chinle, AZ. Upon graduation, she applied to nursing school, but was rejected because she had a D in Chemistry. She attempted to apply for LPN, but was sent home for too much partying. She was living in a house with 7 other women when she decided to join the service. She was sent to Parris Island and eventually Camp LeJeune. She then became a clerk as a Fleet marine Force in Norfolk for 2 years, living at Camp Elmore. She wanted to go to Vietnam, but she was told she did not have enough rank. She left the service in Mar 1973 with the rank of Sergeant. After the service, she went to work for the Air Force.
