She remembers wanting to be an ambulance driver because she knew how to drive. After teachers college for a year, she decided to enlist when she saw some Marines in dress uniform, but she had to wait until 1944 when she was 20 years old to enlist. She recalls she had to lose 15 pounds in 14 days to join. She received orders to report to Camp Lejeune, NC for boot camp. She enjoyed boot camp, but remembers some girls left because of the discipline. After boot camp, she was assigned to Cooks and Bakers school for a few days of classes. While working in the Mess Hall she met her future husband who was a Mess Sergeant in the Marines. She got married in the spring of 1946 after the end of WWII and was discharged June 1946 at the rank of Corporal. They moved to Cherry Point and then to Quantico as her husband changed stations. In 1956 she went to Paris Island. When her husband went overseas, she lived in Minnesota. When her husband returned they went to Cherry Point. Her husband eventually retired as CWO-4 in 1969.
