Mary Lau was born September 1923 in Garner, Iowa. She did a few years of college at Stevens in Missouri. She went to electronics school in Omaha. She was working as a ground attendant for United Airlines in Fresno, CA when she decided to join the Navy. She enlisted in December 1944 and served until August 1946. She served at Hunter college, Patuxent River and assigned to Navy Airplane Transport Service, Quonset Point, Rhode Island, and Norfolk, Virginia. Her role in the Navy was as a Navy Air Stewardess. She flew on DC-3s, P47s, cargo planes. She served during WWII and received a good conduct medal, an American campaign medal, and a WWII victory medal. Her highest rank was Specialist V2C.
