description:
Part 2 of 2. Iva Good Voice Flute was born on January 31, 1968 on the Oglala Sioux reservation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota. She came from a family of military veterans going back to World War II including four women in her family, but she didn't find this history out until after she enlisted in the Air Force in 1991. Her family had historically enlisted in all of the military branches except for the Air Force, so she decided that she would be the first (against her father's efforts to get her to choose the Army). Reflecting on her choice to be in the Air Force, Iva noted that she feels the Air Force was better at promoting women and inspiring confidence in them than the Army or Marine Corps, based on observations she's made with women in those branches. While she felt welcomed and accepted for who he was in the Air Force, upon returning to the Oglala reservation she found that there was often pushback against giving women veterans space to honor their service alongside men. To counter this, Iva became a founder of the first chartered all-woman American Legion Post in the country, where she served as the first Native commander. She has also continued her education, getting an Associates and Bachelors degree for herself, and now works counseling young people about the military. Iva Good Voice Flute reached the rank of Senior Airman and served around the United States from 1991-1995. Iva received the Defense Service Medal. A transcript of this interview is available.
