Part 1 of 2. Born on December 25, 1915 in Selma, Alabama, Colonel Margaret E. Bailey grew up in the state and went to nursing school in Montgomery in 1935. She joined the Army Nurse Corps as a Second Lieutenant in 1944, and after serving in World War II she served in post-war Germany, France, and Japan. Colonel Bailey was the first black nurse to become Chief Nurse in an integrated hospital and to be promoted to the rank of Colonel in the Army Nurse Corps. After 27 years of service, Col. Bailey retired in 1971 with the Legion of Merit for Exceptionally Meritous Conduct, and in 1999 she published her autobiography: The Challenge. Bailey served with AFAM and the 571st US Army MP. She passed away on August 28, 2014. A transcript of this interview is available.
